Tag your cloud costs so they make sense

About tags

Tags split your cloud bill by team, project, customer, or environment. Set up a small, consistent set now, and your monthly bill turns from one number into something you can read and act on. Keeping it consistent is the part that matters.

A tag is a key and a value, like team=payments or env=prod. You can put them on almost anything you run, and all three big providers support them. Once they’re on, the tags flow through to your billing data, so you can group the bill by whatever the tags describe.

A small scheme that works

The mistake is tagging everything with everything. Start with a handful you’ll keep up with:

  • environment: prod, staging, or dev, so you can see what production costs on its own.

  • team or project: who owns the spend.

  • customer or product: only if you bill per customer and want cost per account.

  • owner: a person or email, so there’s someone to ask about a mystery resource.

Four tags, applied consistently, tell you more than twenty applied at random.

Make the tags stick

Consistency is the hard part, because an untagged resource is spend you can’t account for. A few habits keep it honest:

  • Tag resources when you create them, not later. If you use infrastructure-as-code, put the tags there so they’re applied for you.

  • Turn on required-tag rules where your provider offers them, so a resource can’t launch without the tags you care about.

  • Run a quick check each week for anything untagged, and fix it before it piles up.

What tagging buys you

Once the tags are on and consistent, the bill starts answering questions. Production, staging, and dev separate out, so the test environment someone left running becomes obvious. Spend splits by team, which puts the cost in front of the people making the decisions. And a per-customer tag lets you work out what each account costs to serve, the number behind whether your pricing makes sense.

None of this needs a new tool. It’s a small habit, and it turns the monthly bill from a single number into something you can read and act on.
